Students in HPE 305: Adventure Based Physical Education participated in an overnight backpacking trip during the weekend of Oct 4-5. Students hiked the Deep Creek Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They learned how to set up a backcountry camp site, cook a meal, navigate using map and compass, and restore the site using Leave No Trace principles. With temperatures dropping overnight into the low 30’s, students also learned a valuable lesson in being prepared for changing conditions in the backcountry. Students said their best memories were sitting around the fire (to stay warm), eating backcountry cheesecake, and discovering a new lifetime outdoor pursuit.
