Amanda Clapp, science teacher at The Catamount School, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Science Teachers Association (NCSTA). NCSTA’s Distinguished Service Awards are presented to recognize the excellence of contributions to science education in North Carolina. Awardees have exhibited leadership in science education beyond their school district or position and have contributed to improvements in science education, as well.
Drs. Holly Pinter, Kim Winter, and Dave Strahan, published an article in the Middle School Journal this month. The article, “Strengthening developmental trajectories toward responsiveness: Learning to teach at the middle-level,” explored perceptions of professional growth among middle level teacher candidates in a program that attempts to meet these aspirations. Dr. Andrew Bobilya, Associate Professor and Program Director in Parks and Recreation Management recently published a paper titled “The North Carolina Outward Bound School Course Impression Survey: A Psychometric Investigation” in Research in Outdoor Education volume 14. This publication is part of a multi-year project with the North Carolina Outward Bound School investigating the most effective way to measure change following program participation. Dr. Bobilya is joined by co-authors Dr. Brad Faircloth of Montreat College and Dr. Alan Ewert of Indiana University.
On Thursday, October 5, 2017, Debby Singleton, Instructor with Parks & Recreation Management, was invited to present two workshops for the CREW (Collaborative Regional Education Workshop). CREW is a day long professional development conference for regional P-12 teachers, administrators, and support staff. Workshop #1 entitled, “What Happened to Biophila?” focused on the importance of nature and outdoor learning environments and featured the use of Cherokee Central School’s trails along the banks of the Raven Fork Creek. Workshop #2 entitled, “Living for Snow Days…” explored life-work balance for educators through interactive discussion and activities.
