Lee Nickles, director of assessment and technology, has published a journal article on themes in the literature for starting a new distance program in higher education. The article titled, “Initializing an online program: Ten themes from the literature,” was published in the International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning. Dr. Kelly Kelley, Associate Professor of Inclusive and Special Education in WCU’s School of Teaching and Learning and co-director of the University’s University Participant Program, is the recipient of the Leadership in Higher Education Award at the 2017 State of the Art in Postsecondary Education Conference. The award recognizes Kelley’s national leadership in the area of postsecondary education for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was presented at the conference held in Syracuse, New York, on Nov. 15, with the suggestion that Kelley’s “unyielding emphasis on experience as a pathway to knowledge and inclusion” should be celebrated.
Parks and Recreation Management faculty, Glenn Middleton and Andrew Bobilya represented WCU at the Association for Experiential Education Annual International Conference in Montreal, Quebec November 8-12. They co-presented on Spirituality and Experiential Education and Bobilya also facilitated a workshop titled, “21st Century Participants: Can We Achieve the Same Outcomes with Different Levels of Risk?” Middleton and Bobilya also presented individual papers at the Symposium on Experiential Education Research. Dr. Bobilya began a three-year term co-chairing the research symposium.
