The Western Carolina University flag was lowered to half-staff today (Friday, July 29) in memory of Dr. Kirk Smith, assistant professor in the Human Resources program in the Department of Human Services, who passed away on July 21, 2016. Kirk had been a full time faculty member since January 2011 and had been an adjunct faculty member since 2004.
The Human Resources program will broaden their service-learning outreach that provides free human resources consultation to nonprofits, local governments and small businesses, thanks to a recent UNC General Administration grant. The nearly $23,000 grant will be used to create additional partnerships and expand opportunities, according to Marie-Line Germain, associate professor of human resources, who oversees the program. Two activities in CEAP have been named STAR Community Engagement Projects by the WCU Center for Service Learning. These are “Hands-on Learning as an Investment of the Heart and Mind” headed by Robert Beaudet, health and physical education, and “Pro Bono Human Resources Consultants Engage in Real World Projects” headed by Marie-Line Germain, human resources.
The college congratulates our faculty members that earned tenure and/or promotion this year. Three faculty members earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor: Marie-Line Germain (human resources), Heather Thompson Rainey (counseling), and Roya Scales (literacy education). Kim Winter, associate dean of the college, was promoted to Full Professor.
John Sherlock, associate professor of human resources, will give the keynote address at the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) Owner’s Retreat in Raleigh, NC on July 28th.
