Janice Holt, TRACS director, passes away suddenly
November 1, 2012
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Janice Holt, faculty member in the College of Education and Allied Professions. Suddenly and unexpectedly on October 31st, Janice collapsed while working in the office area with what was later determined to be an aneurysm. Janice came to Western Carolina in 2000 after teaching in Jackson County schools for twenty-four years. Janice was a passionate and dedicated teacher, with National Board Certification in middle grades. She last taught science at Fairview Elementary. Janice has been the Executive Director for Teacher Recruitment, Advising, and Career Support in the College of Education and Allied Professions since 2010. She received her Ed.D. from Western in May, 2012, and was selected as the recipient of the AERA Research on Teacher Induction Dissertation Award. Janice was committed to Western Carolina in every way. Being from Cullowhee, she grew up right here and even attended elementary school in the McKee Building. She was greatly respected and loved by her colleagues and students. Janice is survived by her husband (Bob Holt), mother (Phoebe Hooper), sisters (Dianne and Cindy), sons, their wives, and six grandchildren. Janice and Bob’s sons, Adam and David Holt, graduated from Western, as did her husband Bob. We extend heartfelt sympathy to Janice’s family and to all her colleagues here at Western who are mourning her passing.
Funeral arrangements will be sent to the campus community soon.
